FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM (Punch Shaw)
“3 works, 2 guest artists and 1 superb performance”
Van Cliburn Hall at Bass Hall, Fort Worth, Texas
March 10, 2003

The Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth invited a pair of guest artists to help it perform a trio of works -- two quartets and a quintet -- at Van Cliburn Recital Hall on Sunday.
It all added up to a superb afternoon of chamber music.
Pianist Petronel Malan, a competitor in the 1993 Van Cliburn Piano Competition, joined fellow guest artist Michael Shih, concertmaster for the Fort Worth Symphony, and CMSFW regulars David Davidovici on violin, Carter Enyeart on cello and Laura Bruton on viola for an electrifying performance of the Quintet for Piano and Strings in A by Antonin Dvorak.
That piece closed a concert that opened with quartets by Haydn and Beethoven. The String Quartet in E-flat by the former and the String Quartet in C by the latter were both executed with the sort of panache that is typical of this ensemble. The works had different personalities, but both thrilled the audience of approximately 200 with equally fast and furious finales.
